With so much natural beauty right on our doorstep, we have gathered some information about great walks and cycling available in the local area on these pages. For more on cycling, see our cycle page.
Honicombe’s location in the Tamar Valley, a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, means it is an ideal base for exploring the great British countryside. A day’s walking is a great activity for all the family and there is a great variety of interesting sites, beautiful views and places to go to keep everyone interested. There is also plenty of free information and maps to help you make the most of your walks.
There are lots of local walks and public footpaths in the area, some starting right on our doorstep. Here are just a few suggestions of what the local area has to offer:
- Walking along the river or amongst the abandoned tin mines in the Tamar Valley – see below for more info and guided tours.
- Cliff-top views and sandy beaches along the South West Coastal Path
- Wilderness walking and spotting the wild ponies in Dartmoor National Park – see below for more info on guided tours.
And of course, there are plenty of local pubs and cafes serving great food and drink to help you wind down and re-fuel after a hard day’s walking, or even along the way!
Our staff will be happy to provide tips on where to go and help you find something suitable for all ages and abilities. Please make sure that you wear suitable clothing and stick to public footpaths.
Tamar valley walks
The Tamar Valley has numerous trails and paths to keep you entertained. Listed below are some free resources to inspire you!
Tamar Trails – over 25km of trails have been created as part of the Tamar Valley Mining Heritage Project including many not previously open to the public to allow you to explore the mining heritage and beautiful countryside. For more information see the Tamar Valley website and download their great map and guide to the area.
Tamar Valley Walk and Talk – a local gathering of people who want to walk to exercise, explore and learn about the local area, this group has a weekly walk timetable including some with guides to explain about the local area. The walks start in Calstock or Gunnislake, both of which are very close to Tamar Valley Resort and it is all free! See their timetable and contact details for more information
Tamar Valley Discovery Trail – this 48km trail takes you all the way from Tamerton Foliot in Devon to Launceston in Cornwall. That might sounds like a long way, but the downloadable maps and trails on this website will help you chose how much or how little you want to do in one go, and staying at Honicombe is a great way to explore the whole trail over several days on foot!
Trails from the Tracks – detailing several walks starting just down the road from Honicombe Resort, these trails all start at stations on the great scenic Tamar Valley railway line. Combine your walk with a trip on the railway for a great day out. Self guided tour information is available on their website along with lots of other useful information about the railway.
Local guided walks
We are also pleased to announce we have teamed up with local expert guides to bring you a weekly series of local walks within the beautiful Tamar Valley. This is a great way to explore this area of outstanding natural beauty and learn about the local history and nature as well as take in some stunning views.
The experienced local guide will show you, and tell you, all about this beautiful part of Cornwall and Devon. A great day out and suitable for families, you can really get to know your surroundings and enjoy the local scenery.
We will provide you with a packed lunch and a drink for your walk, an information pack about the Tamar Valley and your guide for the day for only £5.00 per person. To find out the schedule of walks or more information about other walks in the area, please get in touch with reception.
Please wear comfortable clothing, sturdy footwear, and be prepared for the weather. Please book with reception no less than 24 hours before the walk.
If you want something more organised on the expansive local moorlands, we will be happy to arrange a day of moorland walking.
With beautiful walks around the archaeologically rich area of Bodmin Moor, the Coastal Paths of Cornwall, or the great open landscape of the Dartmoor National Park walking is one of the best ways to experience the great outdoors first hand and soak up the stunning scenery.
A guided walk can take you on a leisurely stroll around a circular route that will give you the opportunity to appreciate the countryside that you’re in. With awesome natural views and visible history all around, it will be a great day out for everyone. Contact our reception to arrange guided tours suitable for a variety of ages and abilities.
For the kids and parents alike, routes can take in some of the popular letter-boxing sites, so see if you can find them! The walk will give you the opportunity to try your hand at navigation and possibly even take in a village tea-room before heading back in plenty of time for you to relax and prepare yourself for the evening meal that you have earned.
